Furka Pass in winter: closure, Realp–Oberwald car shuttle & access

When snow, ice and Alpine hazards close the Furka Pass road, drivers cannot cross the pass between Realp and Oberwald. There is still a direct connection between the valleys: the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway carries cars through the Furka Base Tunnel on its year-round Furka car shuttle.

For guests of Hotel Tiefenbach, the key point is that the car shuttle connects Realp in Uri with Oberwald in Valais – not the hotel. Whenever the Furka Pass road is closed, the winter approach to our hotel at 2,109 metres starts in Realp, on foot, on snowshoes or on touring skis.

Road status checked on 27 October 2026

At 07:45 on 27 October 2026, TCS reported Furka Pass closed to all vehicles for safety reasons. This is a dated snapshot, not a prediction about reopening. Always check official road information immediately before travelling.

Why does Furka Pass close in winter?

At 2,429 metres, snowfall, ice, drifting snow and mountain hazards can make the road unsafe. The pass road therefore cannot stay open throughout the cold season. TCS lists a usual winter closure roughly from November to June, although the actual closing and reopening dates always depend on conditions.

Short-notice closures can occur during autumn too. Sunshine in the valley or last year's opening date cannot tell you whether the road is passable today.

Realp–Oberwald car shuttle: a direct alternative

The Matterhorn Gotthard Railway connects the car-loading stations at Realp (Uri) and Oberwald (Valais) throughout the year in both directions. The journey through the Furka Base Tunnel takes just under 20 minutes. It lets drivers travel between the two valleys even when the mountain pass road is closed.

Travelling from Valais towards Andermatt, load your vehicle in Oberwald and drive onwards from Realp. In the opposite direction, use the loading station in Realp. Check the current approach roads and service notices and allow for possible queuing.

How often does the Furka car shuttle run?

The operator normally runs hourly departures on weekdays and every 30 minutes at weekends. These are general frequencies, not confirmed times for your travel date. Always consult the current timetable and any service restrictions before departure.

Tickets and fares

A single ticket is currently offered from CHF 33. The amount may differ with the vehicle class and current fare conditions. Buy through the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway and use the final price shown at checkout.

Before arriving at the loading station

  • Buy your ticket online or at the ticket machine at the station.
  • When booking online, register your number plate for automatic barrier recognition where available.
  • Keep your ticket receipt and QR code. If the number plate is not recognised, the QR code can be scanned at the terminal.
  • Follow the signs and staff instructions at the correct station in Realp or Oberwald.
⚠️

Important: A normal ticket does not reserve a place on a specific departure. Queues may occur on busy days. Allow enough time in your travel plan.

Can cyclists use the car shuttle?

Cyclists normally use the regular regional passenger train between Realp and Oberwald, not the car shuttle. The operator permits only limited exceptions outside normal passenger services at staff discretion. Check the train timetable and current bicycle carriage rules.

Does the car shuttle reach Hotel Tiefenbach?

⚠️

Important: No. The car shuttle goes through the mountain between Realp and Oberwald. It does not cross the Furka Pass summit or stop at Hotel Tiefenbach. When the pass road is closed, the hotel cannot be reached by car.

Hotel Tiefenbach is located at 2,109 metres above Realp on the Furka Pass road. When the road is open in summer, guests can drive directly to the hotel. In winter, car journeys end in Realp. Travellers from Valais can use the car shuttle to Realp but must then make the final ascent under their own power.

Winter access from Realp to Hotel Tiefenbach

The climb from Realp gains approximately 560 metres. Allow around 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on fitness, snow and conditions. In suitable circumstances the approach can be made on foot, on snowshoes or on touring skis. There is no maintained winter walking trail and no taxi service to the hotel.

⚠️

Important: This is Alpine winter terrain. Check the weather, SLF avalanche bulletin and local conditions, and plan for daylight, equipment, experience and a safe return. Postpone the ascent if conditions are unsafe.

Taking the train to Realp

Realp also has regular Matterhorn Gotthard Railway passenger trains, including connections from Andermatt and Valais. Without a car, you do not need the car shuttle. Check the SBB timetable for your outward and return dates and coordinate the ascent with your actual arrival time in Realp.

Confirm the hotel's winter opening before setting out

Seasonal opening is planned for winter 2026/27, but the exact dates and room availability depend on snow, weather and hotel operations. Please contact us before the ascent, giving your preferred dates, number of guests, means of travel and expected arrival in Realp. An enquiry is not a confirmed reservation.

Check before every winter trip

  • Latest Furka Pass road closures and approach roads.
  • Current car shuttle timetable, fare and possible waiting times.
  • Passenger rail services to Realp if travelling without a car.
